You beat me to the punch.
There were also a few first generation MR2s that came with a really nifty supercharger. It used an electronically controlled clutch to disengage the supercharger at lower speeds so it didn't sap power when idling, etc.

It's a great car, but nowere near the moster that is the 2nd gen japanese mr2 turbo post-94... It's 100hp more powerful than 1st gen supercharged Mr2... It's REALLY fast... 0 to 60 is the same as my (now ex) LT1 Corvette, which is crazy considering it does not have nearly as much torque...
It's an MR engine though... Unless you're Keiichi Tsuchiya, good luck having fun putting it sideways... it does not like it much :)

Car: $2000
Import fees: $2000
Shipping from port to my door + registration should be less than $1000
Galant VR4 Evolution, Familia GTR and Pulsar GTIR are also somethings I would look for

meh, my R32 GTS-T cost $4k at the auction, got it to the US for $7k total including registration and taxes and shipping from port to my door. R33 will be like that in a few years.

It was totally worth it.
There are other JDMs that are cheaper even. Like a Silvia, Cefiro, Pulsar GTIR etc. And those are just Nissans. Other makes all have equivalent cars that you can get in Japan for like $3k or $2k and less.

If I had the time and garage space I'd love to take one back to the states with me. The R32 GTS-Ts (as Kanaric mentioned) are just as reasonable and can be shipped now.

There are some really good looking ones out there.
The AWD version has the same suspension as a R32 Skyline. RWD version has some front suspension from IDK what. Maybe S13?
Cefiro is the Maxima but the A31, the good one, was before it was the Maxima.
